Luque information

Luque is a town in Cordoba province, Andalucia region.

In the surrounding areas of Luque there are lots of caves in which there is evidence of human life from the Neolithic era: La Encantada, Lóbrega, Campanilla, etc.

First reference we have about the town in the  Arab epoch is about the castle and it appears in some texts in which Ibn Hayyan, an Arab Historian, wrote about a rebellion that took place here. Also in his texts we can read about how they took stones from Luque to build the Mosque of Abderramán III in Córdoba.

The town was conquered by Fernando III el Santo in March 1241. The name of Luque was given to the town to honour three brothers that helped the King on its conquest: Alonso, Antón and Luis Luque. Muslim populations stayed in the town until 1294 because they surrendered accepting the new King. The town was controlled by doña Juana de Ponthieu (wife of Fernando III) and after their son, the town was given to the Venegas family until the XIX century. During that century, the town underwent  a modernization with the installation of public lighting and the railroad.
