Villanueva del Trabuco Information
According to some investigations, in the year 1487 King Ferdinand the Catholic left Antequera with his troops for the conquest of Vélez-Málaga, divided into two fronts. One of which, commanded by the King himself, chose the path that passed through La Fuente de la Lana (Fountain of the Wool); the other front, captained by the Marquis of Cádiz, passed through Trabuco itself.
According to a legend, there was a “venta“ at crossroads near the town, whose owner, to provide himself with food, went everyday to Archidona. In his continuous trips was assaulted and the goods stolen, so he decided to buy a “trabuco” (firearm), which he took with him day and night. Hence, when he went to Archidona everyone who saw him would have said "Here it come the guy of the trabuco". And this is the possible origin of the name of this town.

In the 18th century, the town was part of Archidona municipality. The foundation of Villanueva del Trabuco and other towns nearby was due to the desire of repopulation of these lands by Carlos III. The land was so good for agriculture but nobody wanted to settle there because it was far away from the towns so the King founded new towns and brought in foreign settlers. Six thousand German and Flemish Catholic settlers came, who after occupying areas of Sierra Morena came to other places of Málaga. This is the origin of lots of towns with the name of “Villanueva”.
