Puerto Lope is the largest of the towns that make up the municipality of Moclín. Its generic name comes from Latin and means "Port of Wolves", due to its strategic situation as a natural connection between Eastern Andalusia and Western Andalusia.
The Town established since Roman times, became important during the period of Muslim occupation where it became a free trade port due to its strategic location between the Kingdom of Granada and the Crown of Castilla. This was one of only three places along the entire border from Algeciras to Almeria, where trading could take place.
At the time of the French occupation the town was burned and destroyed because of its resistance to the enemy and later repopulated by people from Asturias and that is the reason why the surname Argüelles (typical from North Spain) is so common in the area nowadays.
